How is it that every month at GO just seems to get bigger and better than ever?!? June was no exception to this trend, with every day full of exciting new activities, adventures and achievements for our participants.

Winter Warmers

It's been seriously cold as winter sets in, and the weather gets dreary. But our participants know how to make the most of the season and have been taking the opportunity to complete some cozier activities.

The Look Good Feel Good crew made some beautiful candles this month, inspired by their favourite colours. The Look Good Feel Good program is all about embracing self-care, personal style and self-expression. Candle making is a fantastic mindful craft to do with friends, and the candles make the perfect ambient addition to a self-care routine.

Like Look Good Feel Good, the Woodwork Crew stayed warm indoors this month. Venturing out to the Seymour Library, Dylan and DSW Ros worked on researching their next project, and took advantage of the free coffee at library while they were at it!

If you're looking for some free winter entertainment this month (and every month!) make sure you tune into the GO Radio Program every Wednesday from 12pm-2pm on Seymour FM 103.9. Whether you're working, driving or rugged up at home, GO Radio can keep you company!

It can get tricky to find the motivation to exercise when it's raining and cold, but Yoga is a great (and fun-filled!) alternative. Our participants got together in June to celebrate International Yoga Day. The mats came out and the stretching started, led by DSW Taylah.

Adaptive Tech

In June, GO got a new addition to our collection of adaptive technology pieces: a new adaptive switch system! This system consists of a button that allows participants to operate appliances such as blenders, with just one touch. This technology removes dependence on fine motor skills and hand strength, making cooking activities safer, more inclusive and more fun.

At GO, adaptive technology is an everyday part of our supports, and the lives of the people we support. Adaptive technology comes in a huge range of shapes and sizes, but all works to remove barriers to participants, and to support people to live with more choice, control and independence in their lives.

Examples of the some of the tech we use at GO includes:

  • One-touch switches

  • Voice-activated devices

  • Adjustable kitchen equipment

  • Communication devices and apps

  • Hearing and vision supports

  • Specialised keyboards

  • Wheelchair accessories

Staff Training

As part of our Biggest Life Possible Quality System, GO is dedicated to Quality Employment - making sure that our workforce is satisfied, engaged and fully equipped to always deliver high quality, best practice support services to our participants.

This month, GO Group Programs support workers participated in a full day training session led by Team Leader Kacie Graham, designed to strengthen our practice and build an even stronger, more connected team.

The day's agenda was packed with practical refreshers and important discussions. Our team upskilled in areas including:

  • Safe manual handling

  • personal care and hygiene support

  • Mealtime Assistance

  • Incident response and reporting

  • Professional communication

Local Entertainment

In June, our participants got out and about and attended a wide variety of local entertainment. At the very beginning of the month, Silvers Circus rolled into town. Our Accommodation and Living crew had a fantastic night enjoying the performance, right here in our own backyard.

Then, our Drama Program took an excursion out to Broadford to watch the Broadford Amateur Theatre Society's (BATs) Production of We Will Rock You! The reviews are in: the show was an absolute riot of rock and roll fun, which all of our participants thoroughly enjoyed! Thank you to the cast for a great time after the show as well!

Rainbow Day

To close out the month, GO celebrated Pride Month and LGBTQIA+ inclusion in our community with a Rainbow Day held on Friday 27th. Our participants dressed in their best and brightest rainbow colours and spent the day completing a wide range of rainbow-themed activities, including crafting, fairy-bread making, a rainbow scavenger hunt, Zumba and pin the pot of gold on the rainbow! At GO, everyone is welcome, and this day was a fantastic reminder.

Also, a big shout out to the GO Literacy group who prepared for Rainbow Day by writing some lovely poetry, inspired by colours and inclusion. Great work guys!
